Glossary · Mp4

MP4.

A widely-supported video container (technically MPEG-4 Part 14) that typically wraps H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio. Output of Safari's `MediaRecorder` and one of the most common formats people upload.

When MP4 matters

Older video editors, embedded players in legacy CMSs, and phone cameras all produce MP4. Screendog accepts MP4 uploads and transcribes them the same as a browser recording.

In Screendog

If Safari produces MP4, Screendog uploads MP4. If Chrome/Firefox/Edge produce WebM, we upload WebM. If you upload your own MP4, it plays and transcribes too. The viewer page plays both.

Frequently asked

Can I force MP4 output?

Not from a Chromium-based recorder without post-processing. Screendog uses whatever the browser produces natively, and accepts MP4 uploads.
